ETH UTOKYO STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP SYMPOSIUM

Below are photos from the symposium itself, which included lectures from Matthias Kohler, Dr. Russell Loveridge, and Yusuke Obuchi. Students and attendees were able to see their multiple perspectives on computational design, and the talks were followed by a productive debate and question session centered around the role of the human in digital fabrication.

ETH & UTOKYO PARTNERSHIP: RECEPTION AND POSTER SESSION

This week we have the pleasure of participating in a series of events between ETH and UTokyo. These events are organized as part of a strategic partnership between the two institutions, and culminates in a symposium event on January 19 and 20. Professor Matthias Kohler, Dr. Russell Loveridge, Dr. René Jähne, and Senior Researcher Hannes Mayer stopped by our laboratory for a visit with professors and students. Mr. Matthias Frey and Ms. Kyoko Suzuki, of the Swiss Embassy in Tokyo, were also kind enough to participate, providing a generous gift of Swiss wine, in addition to taking time to speak to the students in our laboratory about the importance of collaborative efforts.

March 17th, 2015: Yokohama Redux – T_ADS seminar presentation

As part of the event “Yokohama Redux: The Saga of Continuous Architecture” on March 17 at Hongo Campus, following a series of theory seminars, students at the University of Tokyo presented their research and manifestos. The event consisted of mid-term presentations by design studios at Princeton, U-Penn, Columbia, and Nagoya Institute of Technology, and was joined by a seminar group from the University of Tokyo. The topic of the studios and the seminars was a revisiting of the Yokohama International Ferry Terminal Competition. This year marks its 20th anniversary. The event aims to examine and develop the concept of continuous architecture, which was the basis of the winning proposal for the architecture by FOA.

There was a full house for the event and it was followed by lively science-fair format discussions.
Please join us for this event next year.

Symposium: Curation as Risk-Taking

In the world of financial market, the higher risks you take, the greater rate of return you may earn or lose. Does this equation apply to the practice of curation for an exhibition or a symposium at museums and galleries? Can we assume that the more risks are involved, the more successful the outcome of the events could be? Or not?

At the University of Tokyo’s Department of Architecture, 8 distinguished guests from the US and Canada are invited to participate in the symposium to discuss their personal experiences of risk-taking while curating exhibitions and/or projects.

Kenzo Tange Symposium

This year marks the centennial anniversary of Kenzo Tange’s birth. In connection to a symposium, an exhibition is organized in the Architecture Library displaying Tange’s graduating thesis project from Tokyo University in 1938.  There are a series of events have been planned in various places in Japan to cerebrate his lifelong achievements.

The symposium was joined by Tange’s colleagues, former students, and office staff who discussed what was it like to work for him.
