SPL Pavilion 2015 : First Mock-up

After several tests of small physical models and computational simulations, we tested a mock-up of the pavilion with carbon fiber rods. The pattern is first created in 2D and then pops up to a 3D form when anchor points are released.

First Presentation for SPL Pavilion

On April 1st, we had the first presentation for the 2015 SPL pavilion. The research group, composed of PhD and master students from Kuma lab, Chiba lab, and Jun Sato lab, presented in Obuchi lab. The topic of the presentation was woven architecture featuring carbon fiber rods.

Designing the shape of STIK PAVILION

Now that the construction of the Stik Pavilion is finished, we have been working on documenting some of the processes. As such, it could be interesting to revisit the formal design process that the lab was exploring. The following video shows how the shape of the pavilion was generated using the Harmonograph; a mechanical apparatus with two pendulums which generates a geometric shape.

In the past two weeks everyone had shifts for guarding the pavilion while providing information for passers by. We had a little intervention =]

Casting Chopsticks on site at Commune246

We finished (!!) the process of casting Chopsticks onto the main wooden structures of our food cart in Commune 246. They are still covered by blue tarps until getting finished by water-proof coating but we are all super excited to unveil the tarp very soon!
